DBQ: Link to Index of DBQ/Exams by Disability for DC 7614
Definition
The fallopian tubes are two, five-inch long tubes that extend outward from the upper portion of the uterus and end near the ovaries. Fertilization occurs within these tubes.
Etiology
Disease, injury or adhesions of the fallopian tubes may be caused by inflammatory diseases, infection, multiple sexual partners, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), surgery of the uterus, endometriosis, and uterine or fallopian tube cancer.
Signs & Symptoms
Signs and symptoms may include: infertility; ectopic pregnancy; chronic pelvic pain; bloating, fever; nausea and vomiting; abnormal uterine bleeding or vaginal discharge; presence of a pelvic mass; blocked tubes; and pain during intercourse.
Tests
A complete history and physical and pelvic examinations may be indicated. Laboratory studies, papanicolaou (PAP) smear, laparoscopy, hysterosalpingography, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), biopsy, and staging of the disease may be done.
Treatment
Treatments are directed toward eliminating infection and preserving fertility. Medications may be given to treat the specific organism and for pain management. Surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these may be required.
Residuals
Chronic inflammation and scarring of the fallopian tubes, adhesions, chronic pelvic pain, menstrual dysfunction and infertility may be long-term effects. Ectopic pregnancy may occur. Prognosis for cancer may depend on the stage and extent of the disease. Counseling, psychotherapy, and support groups may be indicated to assist the patient in dealing with the diagnosis.
Special Considerations
- None.
